Dear WPATH Members:

On behalf of the WPATH Board of Directors, we are excited to announce the winners of WPATH’s Inaugural Pilot Research Project Program for 2020.

  • Paul Chung, MD: “Development of a Urologic Symptom and Experience Questionnaire for Transgender Women”
    • Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University - Philadelphia, PA, USA
  • Carly Guss, MD: “Bone Density and Bone Marrow Composition in Transgender Youth”
    • Boston Children's Hospital - Boston, MA, USA
  • Sean Iwamoto, MD: “The impact of oral estradiol plus spironolactone on biomarkers of coagulation and thrombosis in transgender women during the first six months of treatment: A pilot study”
    • University of Colorado School of Medicine & Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center - Denver, CO, USA
  • Emilia Lombardi, PhD: “Trans Voice and Well-Being Study”
    • Baldwin Wallace University - Berea, OH, USA
  • Grant Turner, MD and Jean Amoura, MD: “Evaluation of chest wall binding in transgender men by pulmonary function testing”
    • University of Nebraska Medical Center - Lincoln, NE, USA

WPATH launched the Pilot Research Project Program to stimulate new research in transgender/gender non-binary health care, with the plan to fund 5 pilot projects for one year with budgets limited to $5,000 (USD) each. Current WPATH members were eligible and encouraged to submit their proposals.

We were very excited to receive over 55 eligible proposals for review. Submissions were blinded and sent to the Pilot Research Project Committee (Drs. Joshua Safer, Vin Tangpricha and Guy T’Sjoen), the committee then scored the proposals on a 5-point scale in each category; feasibility, novelty, and utility. Once the scores were submitted, the committee reviewed the top proposals to ensure that there was no duplication in university setting.

Overall, we were very impressed by the applications received for this Inaugural Pilot Research Project Program and based on the large response for this grant, the Board will be seeking additional funding for more/increased grants in the coming years.

Thank you to all who submitted an application, and congratulations again to this year’s winners of the 2020 WPATH Pilot Research Grant.

Best Regards,

Your WPATH Board of Directors
