Starbucks and WPATH Move to Improve Access to Trans-specific Health Care This week's big story in virtually every type of media is Starbucks company's announcement that they will offer ALL medically necessary services through their health benefits program for ALL members of their group plan. Starbucks is one of the few (and this is a generous estimate: it may be the ONLY one of the world's) large retail chains that offer health benefits even to part-time workers. We offer stories from two sources about this below. If one looks at the comment sections in various news outlets about this story, the same arguments that we have always heard are being raised again in response to this news: It's too expensive, and it will raise the cost of insurance for everyone. And there are the comedians who think this will be a great opportunity for them to get their nose jobs and hair plugs, etc. And there will probably be some people who will refuse to patronize Starbucks now because they don't want to have to risk seeing a transgender worker. Nevertheless, Starbucks' announcement is a tremendous advance for transgender people. WPATH's team of consultants who worked with Starbucks--Drs. Randi Ettner, Fred Ettner, Loren Schecter, and Jamison Green, and our intrepid Executive Director of Education and Development, Donna Kelly, worked with the Benefits leadership at Starbucks to define the necessary procedures, and prepare the Starbucks team to explain why these treatments were necessary and important for trans people. We are thrilled that Starbucks is proud of this accomplishment, and that they are willing to proudly announce it to the world. --Jamison Green, PhD, Communications Director |
