Urologic/Gynecologic Care of the Trans and Gender Diverse Populations Through the Ages
Presented by:
Javier Belinky, MD and Heidi Wittenberg, MD

This session aims to deliver comprehensive, evidence-based and practical experiences on the healthcare needs of transgender individuals who have undergone  full or partial surgical techniques. From an integrative gynecological and urological perspective, we will explore the most common post-surgical issues faced by this population over time. Attendees will gain essential tools to identify and address these challenges, ensuring holistic and effective care for their transgender patients.

Javier Belinky, M.D.

I graduated with honors from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Buenos Aires in 2000. I completed my residency in Urology at the Urology Division of Hospital Carlos G. Durand in Buenos Aires, where I also served as Chief Resident. From 2005 to 2023, I was a staff physician in the Urology Division at the same hospital.

I specialize in urethral and genital reconstructive surgery and have been responsible for gender affirmation surgery program at Hospital Carlos G. Durand. I have coordinated the Subcommittee on Reconstructive Surgery of the Argentine Society of Urology and am a member of several prestigious organizations, including GURS, WPATH, and the American Urological Association (AUA). I served on the board of WPATH from 2020 to 2022.

Currently, I practice at the CDU Urology Center and Sanatorio Güemes in Buenos Aires. I am faculty member at the University of Buenos Aires, where I direct the Urethral Surgery Module for the Specialist in Urology program. I have numerous national and international publications, have presented at various scientific conferences, and have received multiple awards for my contributions to reconstructive surgery.

Additionally, I serve as Deputy Director of the Specialist in Urology program at the University of Buenos Aires, based at Güemes Clinic.

 

Heidi Wittenberg, M.D.

Heidi Wittenberg, M.D. obtained her Bachelors in Genetics at the University of California, Berkeley, a Masters Degree in Applied Physiology and MD from the Chicago Medical School. Her residency was at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1999, Dr. Wittenberg moved to San Francisco, continued to pursue urogynecologic advances and developed the pelvic medicine centers at California Pacific Medical Center, Pacific Gynecology & Obstetrics Medical Group, and Urogynecology Center of San Francisco. 2013, she was in the vanguard of first board certified specialists in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery specialists. Continued specialization in minimally invasive gynecology and robotics procedures certified her as a Master Surgeon of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology & Robotics by the Surgical Review Corporation. Dr. Wittenberg was recruited to train and perform gender affirmation surgeries such as vaginoplasties and metoidioplasties in order to help the transgender community. 2018, Dr. Wittenberg became director of MoZaic Care, solely focused on gender affirming surgery. Saint Francis Memorial Hospital named her medical director of the Gender Institute in 2020 and Chief of Surgery in 2021. Surgical Review Corporation certified her a Master Surgeon of Excellence in Gender Affirmation Surgery. Dr. Wittenberg traveled on surgical missions to Guatemala and surgical missions in San Francisco for the underserved. For this work she received the Congressional Operations Access Unsung Hero Award in 2011 and another Congressional Award 2018 for giving back to the community.

 


WPATH Members,

We are excited to offer WPATH members more ways to participate in the Global Education Institute (GEI) as we continue to strive to provide enriching programs in transgender/gender diverse (TGD) healthcare to colleagues globally and offer a Certification program as a benefit to members who are interested. Together with our faculty and staff, we have offered over 150 programs with over 11,000 registered attendees.

The GEI Committees have a Medical Lead and a Mental Health Lead, and they Co-Lead their committees. The GEI will have openings for 3 Committee Co-Leads who will:

  • Have a 3-year term from November 1, 2024 - October 31, 2027.
  • Require about 2 hours per week on average, but there are times when there is little work and other times when there is more work.
  • Sit as a member of the GEI Steering Group which meets once per month.

We are looking to fill the following positions:

  • 1 (one) Medical Co-Lead for the Faculty Development Committee.
  • 2 (two) Mental Health Co-Leads,
    • 1 (one) for Faculty Development Committee and
    • 1 (one) for the Curriculum Development Committee.

We invite you to apply for these open Committee Co-Lead positions, especially if you have familiarity with the GEI and are GEI SOC8 Certified. We will use a review process in choosing GEI committee leads. Deadline to submit your application is August 11, 2024.
