Dr. Kylan Mattias de Vries

Kylan Mattias de Vries, Ph.D., is a Professor and Chair of Gender, Sexuality, & Women’s Studies, with a joint appointment in Sociology & Anthropology, at Southern Oregon University. They are also Affiliated Faculty in Ethnic & Racial Studies. de Vries' received a Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies and Ph.D. in Sociology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. de Vries’ scholarly and teaching interests include transgender studies, critical race studies, intersectionality, inequities, and sociological social psychology. His current ethnographic co-research project examines trans people's experiences in rural areas.


Dr. Carey Jean Sojka

Carey Jean Sojka, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies at Southern Oregon University and is also Affiliated Faculty in Ethnic and Racial Studies and Sociology and Anthropology. Sojka received their M.A. in Women’s Studies and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University at Albany, SUNY. Sojka’s research and teaching interests include transgender studies, bodies and embodiment, gender, sexuality, race, disability, and fat studies, and they received the Southern Oregon University Distinguished Teaching Award in 2020. In addition to teaching in the classroom, Sojka also conducts community workshops, trainings, and consultation on transgender, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer issues through the Trans and Queer Training Program.

  
Moderated by Tonia Poteat, PhD

Dr. Poteat is an Associate Professor of Social Medicine at the University of North Carolina. She has more than 20 years of clinical experience providing medical care for transgender adults and has conducted research on the social determinants of health among transgender people for almost a decade. She has a special interest in the intersections of gender, sexuality, race, class, and health.
