WPATH Journal Club – Episode 3 on Monday, December 13, 2021, from 1pm – 2pm Eastern Time

We are excited to announce Episode 3 of our new virtual WPATH Journal Club on Monday, December 13, 2021, from 1pm – 2pm Eastern Time. This online meeting format, featuring articles from the International Journal of Transgender Health (IJTH), allows participants the opportunity to delve further into transgender health research topics and ask questions of the authors. In addition to earning valuable CME credits and ANCC contact hours, the Journal Club provide attendees with the valuable opportunity to interact with the experts doing cutting-edge research in transgender health.

Dr. Amir Dorafshar

Dr. Amir Dorafshar is the Division Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the Plastic and Reconstructive Fellowship.  Dr. Dorafshar has distinguished himself as a national and international leading expert in microvascular reconstruction, and adult and pediatric craniofacial surgery for congenital, oncological, or traumatic conditions. He received his undergraduate degree and medical degree from the University of Manchester School of Medicine, United Kingdom.  He completed his plastic surgery residency at the University of Chicago and joined the Johns Hopkins program for his craniofacial surgery fellowship.  He was the first faculty member recruited to their new department in 2010 and held a joint appointment at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.  During his early career at Johns Hopkins, he helped to further develop the fields of craniofacial microsurgery, virtual surgical planning in craniofacial surgery, and bone tissue engineering. He has co-authored over 200 indexed articles, written several book chapters and co-edited a textbook on Facial Trauma Surgery. He is foremost recognized as a critical member of the team that performed a pioneering facial transplant at the University of Maryland and was subsequently named as a Clinical Co-Director of the Facial Transplantation program at Johns Hopkins. He was an integral member of their education program as Director of the Craniofacial Fellowship program and Director of the Resident Cosmetic program.

Dr. Liza Johannesson

Dr. Liza Johannesson, MD, PhD, is the Medical Director of Uterus Transplant Program at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. She specializes in obstetrics and gynecology. She graduated from the Nobel Prize awarding Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. Her residency in obstetrics and gynecology was completed at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, followed by fellowships in gynecologic oncology at Sahlgrenska University
Hospital and Royal Adelaide Hospital, Adelaide, Australia. She started performing research in 2009 on Uterus Transplantation and presented her thesis in 2012. She was a pivotal part of the world-pioneering first clinical human trial of Uterus Transplantation that started in Sweden 2012. Since 2016, she is the Medical Director of Uterus Transplantation at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, which is currently the largest Uterus Transplant program in the world. She is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Texas A&M. She is president of the U.S. Uterus Transplant Consortium (USUTC). She serves on the Vascularized Composite Allograft (VCA) Committee for the American Society of Transplant Surgery (ASTS). She also serves on the Vascularized Composite Allograft (VCA) Transplantation Committee for the United Network for Organ Sharing Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (UNOS OPTN).

Dr. Loren Schechter

Dr. Schechter is an attending surgeon at Rush University, and Director of the Center for Gender Confirmation Surgery at Weiss Memorial Hospital. He serves on the Executive Committee of The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), helped to author the 7th Edition of The Standards of Care, and serves as co-lead for the Surgery and Post-Operative Care section of the 8th Edition of The Standards of Care. He authored the first surgical atlas concerning Surgical Management of Transgender Individuals and is a founding member and president-elect of The American Society for Gender Surgeons. Dr. Schechter is recognized by Castle Conolly as a “Top Doctor.”
