Dear WPATH Members

We are pleased to announce the following progress in WPATH GEI certification:

  • 31 members have been certified through the 1st round of the grandparenting process.
  • Our first group of mentors have recently been onboarded. We have met with all mentors and are now finalizing their listing to become available to all those intending on being WPATH GEI certified.
  • We have edited the exam slightly, based on the feedback from all members that have taken it so far and we are happy to report that we are ready to receive your application for the 2nd round of grandparent status. We have 10 members ready to go and we ask you to submit your application by July 1, 2019 to Taylor O’Sullivan at taylor@PROTECTED

The online exam link and instructions will then be sent out to all eligible applicants on July 15th and they will have 1-month to complete the online exam, which is SOCv7 open-book format and can be taken in one sitting or throughout the exam window. After the exam is completed by the group and the link has been closed, exams will be marked and everyone  will be notified of their results.

Please review the criteria below and if you wish to be grandparented for certification, email the completed Grandparent Intent Form  along with a copy of your CV and current license to Taylor O’Sullivan at taylor@PROTECTED by July 1, 2019.

Once we receive the applications, we will confirm your membership history/status, review your application and attachments, and then will send you next steps to sit for the exam.

WPATH Grandparenting

Our conversations with experts in the field of credentialing confirmed that “grandparenting” is a typical part of an association’s certification program development process when a new education directive is introduced. An integral part of any certification exam is normalizing, the process by where experienced professionals take the exam to provide a frame of reference to vet the questions and to provide benchmarks to measure future applicants against.

We are happy to recognize our members who have contributed to both the field as a whole and to WPATH specifically through the implementation of an accelerated path to certification. Qualified members in good standing may opt out of course requirements by choosing to demonstrate proficiency through documentation and completion of a certification exam as outlined below.

Individuals applying to be grandparented must:

  1. Meet all the criteria for certification with the exception of attending courses for which they can demonstrate proficiency.
  2. Be licensed and board certified (if applicable) in your specialty or the global equivalent.
  3. Agree to adhere to the WPATH SOC v7 or latest published revision.
  4. Agree to comply with the WPATH approved related continuing (CE) requirements of 20 hours every two-years to maintain certification.
  5. Successfully pass the certification exam.
  6. Must have ten years’ experience in their field of expertise.
  7. Show experience in each of the relevant certification domains. This can be done through the submission of a CV, and a supplemental information form describing training and experience, workshops attended, supervision experience, participation in consultation groups, etc.
  8. Be a member of WPATH in good standing for a minimum of 5 years
