Whichever kind of bedding and cage is used for your small animal, Earth Care is a great solution to keep those pesky odors down for both you and your special animal. For bird cages, simply sprinkle the Earth Care No Pet Urine Smells canister onto the bottom of the cage each time you clean the cage. If the odor still lingers a bit, add some Earth Care between cleanings to the bottom of the cage.

For both snake and rodent habitats, when changing out bedding, before adding new clean bedding, sprinkle Earth Care as the base for the bedding then simply put whatever bedding/litter is used over that. You can also add Earth Care No Pet Urine Smells between cleanings to keep down odors.

Earth Care is made from an all natural mineral. It is non toxic, non hazardous, non-caustic, and biodegradable. It can safely be used around pets and children. It is safe to sprinkle in your pet's cage because it will not hurt your pet even if eaten.

What type of cage is required depends on what type of pet you are interested in keeping. Most rodents are kept in one of three types of cages: aquariums, hamster environments, and wire cages. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. There are also two kinds of cages that are suitable for birds – all wire cages and box cages made up of metal or wood.

Rodents

The first thing to keep in mind is size. A general rule is that an animal should have enough room in its home to run around and get up a reasonable amount of speed without running into its food or nesting area. Rodents are also very fond of standing on their hind legs, particularly on top of whatever toys are in the cage, so any housing should be tall enough for the bedding, the standing animal, and a bit more. At some point, aquariums become too expensive, and if you are keeping something larger than a rat, you should consider a wire cage.

Birds

Ide
ally, cages should be longer in their width or length than in their height since birds tend not to fly up and down. Tall narrow cages do not allow flight and rectangular cages are better than squared or rounded ones. Your bird should be able to stretch and flap its wings without hitting the sides of the cage.
The most popular type of bird cage is made exclusively of wire. This is a great cage to give owners an unobstructed view of their bird, however it offers little privacy or security for the bird. At the same time, the bird is exposed to odors, drafts and noise. The box cage consists of metal or wood on three sides with wire mesh, bars, or glass at the front. This type of cage provides security and privacy to the bird and eliminates other exposures that a wire cage would present.

Snakes

A smaller snake may be kept in a standard aquarium while a larger snake should require at least ¾ square foot of living space per foot of snake. If a snake is small because it is young, it will grow fast and in this case it is best to start with a larger aquarium. For an average corn snake or ball python, two of the species that are recommended for new snake owners, a 20-30 gallon aquarium is suitable.

All different types of small animals need certain types of bedding. While bird cages don’t necessarily need any bedding on the bottom of the cage, their habitat should have at least one perch or more placed at the same height and as far away as possible.

Rodents need to be provided bedding or litter to supply warmth and absorb waste. This has generally been in the form of wood shavings. Unfortunately cedar is commonly used but it has been found that cedar contains some very strong oils, which provide the cedar scent that masks the smell of the cage. These volatile oils can also irritate the skin and eyes of many rodents and possibly even cause permanent damage or death so it is advised to stay away from cedar bedding.

The floor of the snake’s habitat must be covered with some sort of material, or "substrate." While kitty litter or wood shavings may seem to be a nice substrate, most snake experts discourage them because they tend to harbor germs. Simple newspaper seems to be the best choice for most snakes.

Whatever bedding you use, don’t forget to sprinkle Earth Care No Pet Urine Smells under it to eliminate odors!

Why Can Birds Perch on Power Lines?

Birds can often safely perch on a power line without being electrocuted. For the bird (or other animal) to be electrocuted, a potential difference must exist across two points of the bird's body (its feet in the case of a bird on a power line). When perching on a single power line, there is no potential difference between the bird's feet, so it is safe. If the bird touches two power lines at a time, or one power line and a ground, the animal would be electrocuted and die. Many large birds, like eagles and vultures, are electrocuted when their wide wings touch a power line and a ground wire at the same time – often while flying in to land on a power line.

Why does a snake shed its skin?

All snakes are covered with scales, which are thickened areas of a thin outer skin layer. Under this layer is another skin layer that contains pigment cells that give a snake its distinctive color pattern. The arrangement of color patterns, type of scales, and scale rows are used to identify the various species. Rattlesnakes, bullsnakes, and garter snakes have what is called a keeled scale, which has a ridge on the center of each scale. Other snakes, such as the racer and milk snake, have smooth scales, with no ridges. The skin of a snake is dry, not slimy. Molting, or skin shedding, is repeated periodically throughout a snake’s life. Just prior to shedding, the skin becomes dull and dry looking and the eyes become cloudy or blue-colored. After a few days, the eyes clear and the snake "crawls" out of its old skin, which peels backward over the
body from head to tail all in one piece. A new, larger, and brighter layer of skin has formed underneath. An older snake may shed its skin only once or twice a year, but a younger, still-growing snake, may shed up to four times a year. The picture below shows a snake starting to shed its skin.

Is there a snake in your desk drawer?

Petco carries Earth Care Products and once when visiting their corporate offices we noticed that as we walked by different people’s office you could see their cat or dog helping them work. Petco allows workers to bring their pets to work (remember Petco is the place where pets go). Commenting about this to the buyer we were meeting with, she also said you occasionally might see a snake slither by. I was very careful where I stepped or put my hand for the rest of our meetings that day!

- Mary Beth Vaughan, Earth Care Products

One of the most vital things you can do for your cat is to provide them with a litter box that he/she feels comfortable with and likes to use. By understanding your cat’s basic nature and needs, you can prevent most litter box setbacks.
A cat’s main instinct is to “eliminate” in sand or soft soil and although it is a basic necessity, eliminating is used to establish their territories as well. Here are some tips for creating a pleasant environment for your kitty’s sandbox:
- Keep the litter box in a safe and quiet location. Make sure it is not in a corner with no escape – like the end of the laundry room with one entry/exit.
- Keep litter box clean….no one likes a dirty outhouse!
- Keep litter box and the cat’s feeding area in separate places.
- Don’t place litter box on carpet…often th
e feel of carpet is more attractive than the litter.
- Don’t move the box around and if you have to change the location of it, do it gradually (a few inches a day)
- The bigger the box, the better.
Having a covered litter box is a plus for humans because it can keep the odor down, however the odor stays inside the box creating an unpleasant aroma in the kitty’s box. Since kitty’s have a keener sense of smell than humans, it can discourage the kitty from using it’s litter box if not cleaned out often. Sprinkling Earth Care in the litter box once a day can keep odors eliminated whether you have an uncovered or covered litter box.
Suggested cleaning of the litter box is twice a day and every one to two weeks wash the box out completely. If you find you miss a cleaning, are in a hurry or just find even with proper cleaning you can still smell the litter box, Earth Care is a great product to use to keep odors absent.
If your kitty misses the sandbox or has an accident somewhere else he/she isn’t supposed to, clean up the spot and sprinkle Earth Care on the soiled area. Cat urine is a very strong odor and unfortunately it stays in the carpet if you do not have the proper way to get rid of it. That is why Earth Care works great for cat urine. Earth Care draws in odors like a powerful magnet. The odors are adsorbed, neutralized, and encapsulated without any cover ups or fragrances, leaving the air fresh and clean.

With Earth Care’s canister you don't smell any cat odor since it completely takes the odor away from the cat litter box, Maryanne A.
Earth Care will rid the chair of the odor. Sprinkle Earth Care Upholstery and Furniture Odor Remover over the chair where your cat has urinated and leave for 24 hours. You can then vacuum up the granules. You may need to repeat the process, but it will get rid of the urine odor. Earth Care will not damage the leather as it is only a sprinkle and not in a liquid form.

No, this isn’t some joke or just a catchy phrase to get your attention, this is real. Recent facts over the harmful results of ozone generators being marketed irresponsibly as ‘air purifiers’ by its manufacturers has added conviction to the fact that Earth Care Products launched a line of all natural environmentally friendly odor removers fourteen years ago. Odors have been a nuisance to man since his inception.

A report published by the California Air Resources Board in March 2006 showed that some devices that are advertised as “air purifiers” or “air cleaners” purposely emit large amounts of ozone, the main component of smog. Not only are such ozone generators ineffective at cleaning indoor air, but breathing ozone poses serious health risks. Manufacturers sometimes inappropriately refer to ozone as ‘activated oxygen’, ‘super oxygenated’ or ‘energized oxygen,’ implying that ozone is a healthy kind of oxygen. Ozone is not effective at cleaning the air except at extremely high, unsafe ozone levels, and then it is only partially effective. Ozone is a molecule composed of three oxygen atoms. It is a highly reactive, unstable, toxic gas. There is a layer of ozone high up in the atmosphere, called stratospheric ozone that protects us by reducing t
he amount of ultraviolet light entering the earth’s atmosphere. This beneficial ozone layer should not be confused with the harmful ozone that occurs at ground level. Elevated exposures to ozone can cause permanent lung damage, and repeated exposure can even increase the risk of dying among persons already in poor health. Persons especially vulnerable include children and those who suffer from asthma or other respiratory diseases, including the elderly. Studies have shown that, when ozone concentrations are below the health standards, it does not effectively remove biological contaminants. Ozone has been found to react with existing chemicals in the air to create other toxic pollutants, most notably formaldehyde and ultra fine particles, all the while deadening one’s sense of smell. The California Air Resources Board recommends that ozone generators not be used.

So why are they still on the market? No government agency has the authority to fully regulate these devices.

For more detailed information from the state of California’s Air Resources Board you can click on this link; http://www.arb.ca.gov/newsrel/nr053106.htm, or from the United States Environmental Protection Agency at: http://www.epa.gov/appcdwww/iemb/ozone.htm

Why Earth Care is Safe to Use

Earth Care is made from an all natural mineral. It is non toxic, non hazardous, non-caustic, and biodegradable. It can safely be used around pets and children. It is safe to sprinkle in your pet’s cage because it will not hurt your pet even if eaten. It can be applied directly to you pets fur, this is excellent if your pet has encountered a skunk, or to get rid of the “doggie” smell.

Many of the odor and pollution control products on the market today act merely as masking agents. This means they add chemicals to the air to cover up odors and actually increase the level of indoor pollutants in the process. Earth Care on the other hand truly eliminates odors and cleans the air by adsorbing, neutralizing, and encapsulating odors. Earth Care Products are especially beneficial to those that suffer from chemical sensitivity which can be aggravated by fragrances.

Earth Care is safe for Planet Earth. To dispose of Earth Care simply add to your soil, it is an excellent nitrogen soil amendment.

My captors continued to taunt me with
bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from clawing the furniture.

Tomorrow I may eat another house plant. Today my attempt to kill my
captors, by weaving around their feet while they were walking, almost
succeeded - must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair - must try this on their bed.

Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body in an attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear in their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was! Hmmm, not working according to plan.

There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in
solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the food. More important, I overheard that my confinement was due to my powers of inducing "allergies." Must learn what this is and consider how to use it.

I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches.
The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird, on the other hand, has got to be an
informant and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room, his safety is assured. But I can wait; it is only a matter of time.

Skunks, Living with these Gentle Mammals

Skunks are members of the weasel family. There are four species of skunk in North America: striped skunks, hooded skunks, spotted skunks and the scarce hognosed skunks.

Striped skunks measure 20-30 inches long (including the wide, bushy tail) and weigh 6-10 pounds (about the same size as a house cat). Their strong forefeet and long nails make them excellent diggers. They tend to be slow-moving animals, never in much of a hurry, and are generally poor climbers. A litter of from one to seven young is born from late April to early June.

A skunk’s territory may span 30-40 acres. In the wild, skunks tend to den in shallow burrows or hollow logs. They are hardly ever found more than two miles from a water source. In urban territories, skunks den beneath buildings, decks, dumps and woodpiles. They are capable of burrowing a den a foot or so underground, with well hidden entrances. They like warm, dry, dark, and defensible areas; most house basements and crawl spaces qualify.

Skunks are generally nocturnal and begin foraging at sunset. Skunks are omnivorous and help keep the rodent population in check. They travel five to ten miles within their territory at night looking for field mice and other small rodents as well as lizards, frogs, birds, eggs, garbage, acorns, and fallen fruit.

They also dig for insects, especially beetles, larvae, and earth worms. Their diet includes black widow spiders and scorpions. Being carrion eaters, they help keep roadways and neighborhood clean. An estimated 70 percent of a skunk’s diet consists of insects considered harmful to humans.

The skunk’s chief enemies are cars and great horned owls. Skunks rarely attack unless cornered or defending their young. If approached by an intruder and unable to flee, a skunk will usually fluff its fur, shake its tail, stamp the ground with its front feet, growl, stand on it hind legs, turn its head and spit to scare the potential attacker. If those techniques do not work, it will lift up its tail and spray.

The chemical that skunks spray is ejected in a fanlike pattern from two small openings near the animal’s rectum. The glands that produce the chemical hold enough for five or six full powered sprays, but skunks seldom spray with out warning or cause. Although they have sharp teeth, they rarely use them in defense, because their spray is accurate up to 15 feet.

Skunks have adapted well to our neighborhoods; it’s not uncommon to find skunks and domestic cats dining peacefully together. There have been cases of skunks entering homes through a pet door, dining with family cat and finding a quiet closet or empty bed to spend the night. As long as the skunk does not feel threatened, it won’t spray.

With their slow, waddling gait, and bushy tail, these gentle mammals are delightful to see from a distance, and play an important role in keeping nature in balance—the natural way. The best protection against them is to modify your habitat to limit resources available to them.

Hints

1. Do not feed the skunks. They can easily become dependent on human food sources.
2. Never leave pet food outside.
3. Never discard edible garbage where skunks can get to it.
4. Secure garbage containers and eliminate their odors. Sprinkle Earth Care’s Clear the Air Skunk Odor Remover or Pet Urine Odor remover in your trash can. Hang an Earth Care Bag in the garage near your trash cans.
5. A persistent, faint skunk odor around a hole leading under a foundation or deck indicates a skunk may be present. To find out, cover the hole with loose dirt; if a skunk is in residence, it will dig out during the night. Allow three days for the test; if dirt remains undisturbed, and then close the opening with masonry, board, or hardware cloth.
6. Install one-way doors on entrances to skunk dens, allowing the skunk to leave at night but barring if from re-entering. Watch for any new holes. Do not use one-way doors during May through August, when babies may be in the den. If the mother cannot return, the babies will starve. This is inhumane and can also cause odor problems.
7. Place mothball-filled socks and or sprinkle cayenne pepper around your yard to discourage digging.
8. If a skunk strays into your garage, leave a door to the outside open and let the skunk exit on its own.
9. Securely enclose poultry, especially at night. Repair all openings in coop or fencing. Fencing should extend 6 to 8 inches underground to prevent skunks and other animals from digging under.
10. Debris and brush piles should be removed or stacked neatly to eliminate suitable cavities.
11. Lighting up of denning sites and a portable radio my cause the skunk to seek a more suitable habitat.
12. Keep pet doors closed at night to prevent skunk parties at your pet’s food bowl!
13. Keep fruit trees picked and don’t leave rotted fruit on the ground.
14. Restrict use of birdseed. Skunks are attracted to it and to the birds and rodents that use the feeder.
15. If possible, eliminate outdoor sources of water.
16. Battery operated flashing lights, tape recorded human noises, scattered moth balls and ammonia-soaked rags strategically placed may deter skunks from entering your yard.
17. Trapping and relocation of skunks is not a recommended or viable alternative. Wild animals are territorial and like species will simply take over the area vacated by the relocated or dead animal.

If You are Sprayed by Skunks

If you are sprayed by a skunk, or your pet is sprayed by a skunk follow the steps below:

Customer Letters

To Whom It May Concern:
On November 10th, 1994, my husband went outside in the early morning to "investigate" a noise he had heard. The noise ended up being a skunk and he was sprayed point blank from the knees down.

My entire house, carpets, furniture, not to mention my husband, was consumed by this horrible odor. I frantically searched through the phone book for help. After making several calls and not receiving a call back, I looked under "Deodorize" and found Earth Care Products. I called, left a message, and within minutes received a call back from Bill Vaughan. Bill calmed me down, and assured me he could help me out. He not only told me what to do for my husband, but he patiently explained in detail how to remove the odor from the house, and our clothes.

Bill was right, I purchased the product, did exactly as he told me, and within 24 hours the odor was completely gone. Bill's customer service went beyond the call of duty. His patience, genuine concern, and great follow-up was more than we could ask for.

As far as the product, it performed miracles. We hope never to encounter a situation like this again, but if we ever do, it is reassuring to know that Earth Care Products are available.
